Indica, Sativa & Hybrid Strains
Indica, sativa and hybrid are the first words you see on a flower menu. They are a useful starting point, a rough guide to a plant’s family and its commonly described effects. The label on the jar tells you more. Our mission is to bring joy through the science and understanding of cannabis, and the science part is simple. Read the label: THC, CBD and, when listed, terpenes.

Indica strains
Indica plants tend to grow short, with broad leaves that are often a deeper shade of green. Indica and indica-leaning strains are commonly described as relaxing and body-forward, and many shoppers save them for the evening. Effects vary from person to person, so take the type as a hint, not a promise.
Four indica-leaning strains worth knowing:
Ice Cream Cake
An indica-leaning hybrid from Wedding Cake × Gelato #33, bred by Seed Junky. Look for frosty, dense buds and a doughy nose with vanilla underneath. See the Seed Junky brand guide for what each store carries.
Florida Kush
An indica-dominant strain from the OG Kush lineage. Its flavor is commonly described as spicy and herbal over a rich, earthy base. Potency varies by batch, so check the label.
Black Maple
An indica-leaning hybrid with fruity, earthy notes and a little sweetness. Check the label for each batch’s THC, CBD and, when listed, terpenes.
First Class Funk
An indica-leaning hybrid with a pungent, funky nose. THC and CBD vary from batch to batch, so read the label before you pick one.
Sativa strains
Sativa strains trace back to landrace plants, local varieties that adapted over many generations to warm regions such as Africa, Central America and Southeast Asia. The plants grow tall and slender, with narrow leaves, and take longer to flower than indicas.
Sativa and sativa-leaning strains are commonly described as bright, uplifting and energizing, which makes them a common daytime pick. Effects vary.
Durban Poison
The classic landrace example: a sativa from South Africa, named for the city of Durban. Its aroma is commonly described as sweet and earthy, with a bold pine flavor.
Hybrid strains
A hybrid is a cross of indica and sativa genetics. Depending on its parents, it can lean either way or sit balanced in the middle, which is why you will see terms like indica-leaning or sativa-leaning. Most popular strains today are hybrids. Ice Cream Cake, Black Maple and First Class Funk above are all hybrids that lean indica.
White Runtz
From the same Gelato × Zkittlez line as Runtz, but its own cut: frosty, pale buds and a citrus-orange, creamy nose with a hint of sour berry. Where Runtz reads sweet and sour, White Runtz reads citrus. Terpenes vary by batch, so check the label.
Bubblegum Gelato
A balanced hybrid with a bubblegum-and-fruit aroma and an earthy finish. As with any strain, aroma and potency shift from batch to batch.
Beyond the label: THC, CBD and terpenes
The type on the jar does not decide how much THC or CBD is inside. You may have heard that sativas run high in THC and low in CBD, or that indicas carry more CBD. Neither rule holds up. The THC:CBD ratio depends on the specific strain and batch.
Terpenes shape aroma and flavor. They range from citrus to berry to pine and beyond, and they show up in indicas and sativas alike. Finding the terpenes you enjoy helps you narrow down your taste, like finding the perfect flavor profile in a craft brew. Some researchers think terpenes and cannabinoids work together; read more in our guide to the entourage effect.
Check the THC and CBD on the package or the menu listing; some listings also show terpenes. Format matters too. Flower, vapes, edibles and tinctures differ in how fast the effect arrives, how strong it feels and how long it lasts.
